Sport climbing is a relatively new climbing discipline that emerged by the end of the 1970’s in France. The Alps in France has a lot of rutes where the guides put pins into the rock so they could belay the leaders in case of a fall, and left them there for use in other occasions. Young climbers realized the potential of such practice so they started securing harder, steeper rutes – first with permanent pins and than with bolts, put into holes that were drilled out in the rock. Most sport rutes are as long as about half of the rope or less. Sport climbing considerably increased the safety standards of extreme climbing, because it goes to the extreme boundaries (to falling), with little probability of belaying failure.

Climbing in Bosnia and Herzegovina has developed since this sport came to Europe, but for economical and other reasons it did not gain a large number of . With the beginning of the war this sport gets into an 11-year pause and until 2001 there are no activities. With the construction of the first artificial wall of the climbing group “Extreme” in Banja Luka, the conditions were made for continuing and developing sport climbing. Every ear there are more and more rutes and climbing areas, every year there are more young people interested in this sport and finally climbing camps are organized and are attracting more and more people foreign climbers.
